NEET & Test Preparation
Guidance on NEET qualification and academic preparation for MBBS abroad.
Do You Need NEET for MBBS Abroad?
Yes. As per the NMC (National Medical Commission) regulations, all Indian students wishing to pursue MBBS abroad must qualify NEET (National Eligibility cum Entrance Test). This has been mandatory since 2018.
Without a valid NEET scorecard, you will not be eligible to apply for FMGE (the licensure exam) on returning to India — effectively making your foreign MBBS degree non-usable for medical practice in India.
Minimum NEET Score Requirements by Country
| Country | Minimum NEET Percentile | Approx. Score Range |
|---|---|---|
| Russia | Qualifying (50th percentile for UR) | 300–400+ |
| Kazakhstan | Qualifying (50th percentile for UR) | 300–400+ |
| Philippines | Qualifying | 300+ |
| Georgia | Qualifying | 300+ |
| Kyrgyzstan | Qualifying | 300+ |
| Bangladesh | Qualifying | 300+ |
| Nepal | Qualifying | 300+ |
Higher NEET scores may be required for certain NMC-approved universities with more competitive seats. Minimum qualifying score for Unreserved category is typically 50th percentile; SC/ST/OBC is 40th percentile.
NEET Eligibility Criteria (Quick Reference)
- Age: Minimum 17 years as on 31 December of the admission year
- Class 12: Physics, Chemistry, Biology/Biotechnology, and English — minimum 50% aggregate (UR); 40% (SC/ST/OBC)
- Indian citizen or OCI card holder
- Maximum 3 attempts (some states allow unlimited — check NTA guidelines)
NEET Preparation Strategy
Start with a Strong Foundation
NEET tests Class 11 and 12 NCERT content in Physics, Chemistry, and Biology. Your foundation in these subjects determines your score. Don't rush — build conceptual clarity first.
Subject-wise Priority
- Biology (360 marks): Highest weightage — 90 questions. NCERT line-by-line is essential. Focus on Genetics, Ecology, Human Physiology, and Plant Kingdom.
- Chemistry (180 marks): Balance Organic, Inorganic, and Physical Chemistry. NCERT is the backbone; supplement with NCERT exemplar.
- Physics (180 marks): Most formula-intensive. Focus on Mechanics, Electricity, Optics, and Modern Physics. Practice numerical daily.
Study Resources
- Books: NCERT Class 11 & 12 (mandatory); H.C. Verma (Physics), O.P. Tandon (Chemistry), Trueman's Biology
- Online platforms: Allen Online, Aakash iTutor, Unacademy NEET, PW (PhysicsWallah)
- Mock tests: NTA official mock tests (free on NTA website), Allen Major Tests
Time Management
- Spend 6–8 hours studying per day (sustained, focused study — not passive reading)
- Dedicate 2 hours to Biology, 2 hours to Chemistry, 2 hours to Physics daily
- Take 1 full-length mock test every Sunday and review it Monday
- Use the last 2 months only for revision and mock tests — no new topics
Common Mistakes
- Ignoring NCERT and jumping to reference books too early
- Not analysing mock test mistakes — just solving, never reviewing
- Studying too many topics at surface level instead of fewer topics deeply
- Skipping Biology for Chemistry/Physics (Biology carries 50% of total marks)
What If My NEET Score Is Low?
If you qualify NEET (cross the cut-off) but have a lower score (300–400 range), MBBS abroad may actually be a better option than private Indian medical colleges, which require much higher scores for limited seats. Several excellent NMC-approved universities abroad admit students with qualifying NEET scores.
We counsel students based on their specific NEET score to identify the best matching universities worldwide.
Dropping a Year for NEET
If you're planning to appear for NEET again:
- A focused drop year with proper coaching significantly improves scores
- Identify your weak subjects from your previous attempt's score report
- Consider a NEET-focused coaching centre (Allen, Aakash, Motion, PW)
- Meanwhile, begin your research on MBBS abroad options so you can act quickly once your score is out
